NEW OBSERVATORY : January 20th, from 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM
Towards New Urban Challenges? Insights from the European E-commerce Barometer and the Challenges of Shared Street Space
This observatory will provide a European perspective on the impacts of e-commerce and on the responses developed by territories to reconcile commercial attractiveness, the calming of city centres, and the multiple uses of street space. Examples of initiatives implemented in various European cities will illustrate the levers that can be mobilised to better organise and share urban space.
This event is aimed at local authorities, mobility stakeholders, retail and urban planning professionals, as well as any organisation involved in city-centre dynamics at the European level.
The European Observatory was launched on February 8, 2024 at the European Parliament. It comprises 5 different themes: Town center management, trade, crafts and markets, Logistics and last-mile delivery, Culture and animation, Housing and urban life, Urban planning and sustainable mobility.
The European Observatory for Urban planning and sustainable mobility is co-chaired by Markus PETER, Researcher for EIFER, at University of Karlsruhe, Germany, and Daniel LECA, Vice-President of the Hauts-de-France Regional Council.
Sustainable planning and mobility are crucial for city centers, as they promote efficient use of space and resources, reduce traffic congestion and lower environmental impact. Effective planning ensures balanced development, improving public spaces and quality of life, for example through pedestrianization. Sustainable mobility options, such as public transport, cycling and walking, reduce dependence on cars, cut pollution and promote a healthier, more accessible urban environment. Together, they support economic growth, social inclusion and the long-term sustainability of the city center.
