In a bold move toward a sustainable future, 12 Ukrainian cities are partnering with European counterparts to work toward climate neutrality – even as the war with Russia continues. Through the EU-funded SUN4Ukraine project, these Ukrainian municipalities will receive support from cities already part of the EU Mission for 100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities.
These partenerships will help Ukrainian cities integrate clean energy, climate adaptation, sustainable transport, and citizen engagement into their rebuilding plans. Each Ukrainian city is matched with an experienced European city based on shared priorities and challenges.
Some of the pairing include : Chernihiv/Amsterdam – Kyiv/Leipzig – Mykolaiv/Barcelona – Vinnytsia/Dijon – Kharkiv/Izmir
In addition, Munich and Oslo will act as mentor cities, offering guidance across all 12 Ukrainian municipalities.
Officials highlighted that the project is about more than technical support – it’s also about solidarity, resilience, and preparing for a peaceful, climate-friendly European future. As Patrick Child from the European Commission noted, this collaboration is designed to “fast-track solutions that transform people’s live.”
Once the 18-month partnership phase ends, SUN4Ukraine will launch a Ukrainian Cities Climate Hub – a shared platform for Ukrainian and European cities to exchange ideas, best practices, and continue working toward climate goals together.
Launched in May 2024 and funded under the EU’s Horizon Europe program, SUN4Ukraine is part of a larger effort to support Ukraine’s recovery while staying focused on long-term climate and sustainability goals.
