The Municipality of Coimbra is developing and implementing a strategy to revitalize the historic city center, organizing dynamic and attractive cultural events for all age groups and different audiences. The aim is to attract the city’s inhabitants and visitors to the “heart of the city”, creating new economic, social, and cultural dynamics in a unique area of Coimbra, full of history and heritage.
An illustrative example is the Book Fair organized in the heart of downtown Coimbra in the framework of the annual City Festivities of the first week of July. Praça do Comércio – a symbolic and central square in the historic center – will host this anchor event organized by the Municipality of Coimbra in partnership with several local and national institutions.
This great event dedicated to promoting books has a diversified program that includes meetings with writers and distinguished figures that range from literature and gastronomy to national and international news. The activities also include a program for children and concerts that take place in one of the main squares of the historic city center that the Municipality has already begun to transform.
Regarded as the civic center of the city, the downtown area of Coimbra is home to some great shopping streets and unique monumental heritage. It also connects the Alta (Upper Town), dominated by the emblematic University de Coimbra, and the Mondego River, known for the beauty of its banks and used for sports and leisure.
