Zaragoza, the capital of Aragon, is an ancient city, was founded by the Romans as Caesaraugusta, conquered by the Arabs in the eighth century, in the early twelfth century was liberated by Christian troops, and became the capital of Aragon. Zaragoza is famous for its art and architecture, folklore and gastronomy.
The most important historical buildings are the Basilica del Pilar, one of the most famous sanctuaries in Spain, La Seo (cathedral) and the Aljafería Palace (Palacio de la Aljafería). UNESCO has listed the Cathedral (la Seo), the Aljafería Palace, and the Church of San Pablo in the world heritage sites between the Mudéjar architecture of Aragon.
Zaragoza celebrates the end of the year with a unique atmosphere where the magic of Christmas blends with local traditions. The heart of the festivities is located in the Plaza del Pilar, which is transformed every year into a real nerve center for celebrations. The Christmas market, which celebrates its 13th edition this year, attracts thousands of visitors each winter. Although Zaragoza may not have the German gothic grandeur of Nuremberg or Cologne, it is inspired by the essence of the Central European Christmas markets, while offering a very Aragonese touch.
The Christmas market in Plaza del Pilar is much more than a collection of wooden huts. From 2 December, visitors can admire the lighting of the square, which will remain illuminated until 8 January. More than fifty activities are offered, for young and old. Cookie decorating workshops, puppet shows, Christmas song concerts and even costume walks will liven up the square throughout the holiday season. Among the highlights, visitors will discover an impressive local craft market, with stalls offering culinary specialties such as mulled wine and sweets, clothing, accessories, and original gifts.
The Plaza del Pilar is transformed into a real place of fun with attractions for the whole family. Among these, the giant slide, which is a joy for young and old, is a must. Children can also meet Santa in his house, while adults will be seduced by the large Christmas tree and ice rink that settle on the square. In addition to the classic attractions, a ferris wheel and ecological pony rides add some magic to the event.
One of the peculiarities of the Zaragoza Christmas market is its life-size Christmas crib. Located a few steps from the Basilica of the Pilar, this crèche of more than 1000 m2 recreates scenes of ancient Judea with a hundred figurines, representing iconic places such as the palace of Herod or the souk of merchants. Tours are organized every day, and last year more than 300,000 people were lucky enough to discover this facility.
The market also hosts charity booths, supporting various local associations such as Aspanoa and La Caridad Foundation, where visitors can make purchases in solidarity and contribute to important causes.
Zaragoza is not limited to its main place for festivities. Other areas of the city are also animated with events such as round joteras, traditional concerts of Aragonese jota. The Zaragoza auditorium will also host concerts and competitions, such as the traditional Christmas Carol Contest or concerts from the Kingdom of Aragon. The Main Theatre will present plays, while the Teatro del Mercado will offer puppet shows, perfect for families.
The mayor of Zaragoza, when presenting the Christmas program, stressed that this event is not only a fun moment for the inhabitants of the city, but also attracts a large number of tourists. For those who want to learn more about the city during this festive period, guided tours of sites such as the Monastery of the Canonesas or the works of Goya will be offered, as well as sightseeing bus rides decorated in the colors of Christmas.
On December 31, the city will host a New Year’s Eve celebration hosted by the Mazinger Orchestra to celebrate the arrival of the new year. And of course, on January 5th, the great Three Kings parade will close the festivities with a spectacular parade that will start from the Joaquín Costa school, an event very awaited by the inhabitants of the city.
Zaragoza, with its mix of local traditions and European influences, offers a unique Christmas experience where culture, solidarity and festivities meet in a warm and friendly atmosphere.
